We are an ordinary family following the call of God on our lives to step out and show others the same grace & love that He has shown us.
The Call to Go
We had a moment, the kind of moment that requires no words. Sitting in a mission’s conference, we both felt it. It was time. The desire that God had planted in our lives as singles, then cultivated through our marriage, had been refined and now required action.
The next 6 months were spent prayerfully considering the many areas of service. We began the application process with MTW (Mission to the World), our denominations sending agency, in October 2011. After undergoing a strenuous vetting process, we were approved for the field in March 2012.
Why Australia?
We felt a call to go, but not to any particular place. With the aid of our MTW recruiter & our mission’s pastor, we looked at several areas where our skill set & gifts could be put to use. When we started learning about the diversity of Australia & the need for workers there, we started feeling a strong pull to the land.
We were able to meet & spend the day with Jim & Claudia Jung, the couple who has spearheaded work in Sydney on their own for the past 8 years. There was an instant bond over vision of ministry & our gift sets were the exact needs they had been praying for. We were left with no doubt that Australia was where we were to go.
The more we learned about the ‘face’ of OZ, the more we grew to love it. The church plant the Jung’s have started has roughly 60 young adults attending regularly. The majority of the church is Asian, mostly first generation Korean Aussies.
In August 2012, we had the opportunity to take a ‘vision trip’ to see first hand the work in Sydney. We were blown away by the diversity & culture, not to mention the beauty of the land. Over 40% of Sydney’s 4.6 million inhabitants are immigrants. What an amazing opportunity to reach the nations!
How will we Serve?
We will be working with people from literally all over the globe… equipping the nations with the Gospel to take back to their home country. Closed countries like China, India, and all over the Middle East are represented in this one city.
We have to two main areas of focus. First, we will assist with the church plant, Harbour City Church. Chris will serve as an elder providing shepherding, discipleship and assist with administrative oversight. Catherine will be involved in discipleship of the women in the church. Chris’ second area of focus will be to start & head up an outreach to those in the market place, City Sanctum. Being a Christian in Sydney is unique, especially amongst the young working crowd. There has been amazing outreach to the university students, and we want to further that outreach to their careers. Both of us will be involved in outreach in our every-day lives; developing relationships with neighbors on our street, meeting others through our sons’ involvement at school and sports and still more people as we take our kids to the park.
The church plant started by the Jungs, Harbour City Church, is on the brink of exciting growth. We are excited to see God moving in the hearts of Aussies & look forward to coming alongside new believers in discipleship & Bible studies.
